I started programming since 2004, with a variant of BASIC on the PlayStation 2 (called Ya-BASIC… Yes!).
Since then, I used numerous languages (Python, C#, Java, C, C++, VBA) mostly for 3D game development, from full-fledged game engines Unreal (and a couple of years ago, Unity) to rendering engines such as Panda3D (although it’s considered as a full engine).

During my Bachelor and Master degrees, I continuously heard that there’s about 6,000 to 7,000 natural languages on earth, most of them in danger.
In contrast, there’s between 700 to 10,000 programming languages (yes, that’s a very huge difference), many of them are just used on a very, very specific case. And, unlike natural languages, anyone can create a new programming language (which can be true for natural languages, but it’s more difficult to actually document it and spread it).
In both cases, only a few languages are widely used. In programming languages, such as C, C++, C#, Java, Python, JavaScript, and PHP for programming. However, individuals can typically master only a limited number of languages in either category.
